The Top 10 Cover Songs Since The Year 2000

Covers are a contentious issue. How exactly do you judge the merits of something that isn’t the brainchild of the artist performing it? Where do you draw the line between “replica” and “reimagining”? Can a cover ever be considered better than the original? Is the “Punk Goes…” cover album series still going? If it is, can someone please stop it?

It’s complex and I have no intention of delving into such a deep topic. What I’m going to do is run down what I feel are the best (relatively recent) examples of an artist taking another artist’s work and making it their own.

Better Call Saul S03E08: “Slip”

It hasn’t yet been established how much longer we’re gonna be seeing Saul onscreen, but as seen in this episode, it doesn’t seem like we’ve got a lot more story left to tell. Jimmy‘s rediscovered the joy of using the law unethically to get out of jams and all that’s left between him and success is the rest of his suspension sentence. Theoretically everything could be in place within the next two episodes, though it’d be rushed. It’s likely that one more season should wrap things up. Spoilers follow.

Concert Review: K.I.D @ Mod Club

As the lines between music genres become increasingly blurred, a larger amount of artists are losing their apprehension about dabbling in different styles. Mississauga’s K.I.D are a perfect example of this magpie approach to music, and this past Monday night at the Mod Club was a good taste of their non-traditional sound.
